Description

The clay bodhisattva (he who attains perfection) shows the Chinese influence in the Nara period. Japan left behind the bronze tradition and adopted new techniques from the continent : 'dry lacquer' and clay. Taking advantage of the spread of Buddhism supported by the Emperor, artists generated a refined art, far from being a slavish copy of the Chinese models.
