Description

The striped material covering the Pharaoh's head and tied in a bow at the back of the neck is called the nemes. On the forehead there is usually a ureus, a serpent symbolising royalty. This piece of material varied in style during the 30 dynasties, but always had the same magic significance. It was not only a sign of authority, but also gave the person who wore it power and protection.
