Description

Buddhism, a vehicle of Chinese culture, came to Japan via Korea at the end of the Vth century. When in the Ixth century Heian-Kyo (today Kyoto) became the imperial capital, Japan freed herself from Chinese influence and created her own aesthetic values. As their material, sculptors preferred wood overlaid with lacquer and gold leaf.
