Description

The motifs painted on masks, when not linked to shamanism, represent emblems. They mark tribal and social identity, and allude to the rights and privileges alloted to ancestors by supernatural beings. They were passed down by inheritance or marriage. They were family property. Families could own them in large numbers, but only the chief was entitled to use them all.
