Description

The portrait, which did not develop much in Asia, appeared in Japan in the 8th century. Soon the idealism of the early stages was replaced by an uncompromising realism, as we can see in this polychrome wood carving. It represents Chogen (1120-1206), the superior of the Todaiji monastery at Nara, who diffused a popular form of Buddhism called the worship of Amida, or the 'Pure Earth' sect.
