Description

The jaguar was very important for the Mochicas. It is thought they obtained it by bartering with Amazonian tribes. Ceramics often show it with a rope round its neck (a sign of domestication), or wormas an ornament by important functionaries. In this jaguar vase the eye sockets must originally have been inlaid with stone or wood, glued with plant resins.
